Sony Reveals Until Dawn 2 for PS5; Launches January 28

Sony has officially announced that Until Dawn 2 will launch for the PlayStation 5 on January 28, 2027. The reveal, delivered during a recent State of Play showcase, confirms that the franchise is returning with a drastic change in scenery and a new development team.

Moving away from the snow-bound mountains of the first game, the sequel takes place on Akishima Island, a remote tropical paradise that has been abandoned for decades. The plot centers on a television ghost-hunting crew known as "the Dead True." The game is being developed by the Liverpool-based Firesprite Games, with narrative support provided by AdHoc Studio, the creators of Dispatch.

A Shift in Creative Direction

This sequel follows the 2024 remake of the original Until Dawn but marks a significant departure in production. While the first title was the hallmark of Supermassive Games, the transition to Firesprite Games and the collaboration with AdHoc Studio signal a new creative direction for the series. Despite the change in studios, the game maintains a link to its psychological roots; Peter Stormare is confirmed to return to the cast, reprising his role as Dr. Hill.

Stu Tilley, creative director at Firesprite, stated that players can expect a "deeply layered story packed with rich characters, razor-sharp dialogue, fraught relationships, tough decisions, and yes... more than a few gruesome deaths."

Industry Implications

The move to a tropical setting and a new development house suggests Sony is looking to expand the Until Dawn identity beyond the "cabin in the woods" trope. By pairing Firesprite's technical capabilities with AdHoc Studio's narrative expertise, Sony appears to be doubling down on the high-stakes, choice-driven horror that defined the original's success. The return of Dr. Hill further suggests that while the environment has changed, the psychological manipulation and dread central to the franchise will remain.

Pre-Order and Edition Details

Pre-orders for the title begin on September 10 and will include Dr. Hill-themed outfits and bobbleheads. Sony is also offering a Deluxe Digital Edition, which features a "Diorama of Death" and a "Y2K Neon Vibes Pack."

As the January release date approaches, the industry will be watching to see if the shift in development teams translates to a different style of gameplay or if the core "butterfly effect" mechanics remain the primary driver of the experience.
