Square Enix Unveils Final Fantasy Resonance in HD-2D
The single-player RPG reimagines the 'Lapis' arc of Brave Exvius with a strictly turn-based combat system.
Square Enix provided a first hands-on look at Final Fantasy Resonance during Gamescom 2026, signaling a return to the series' traditional roots. The title marks the first time the mainline Final Fantasy brand has adopted the HD-2D art style.
Final Fantasy Resonance is a single-player recompilation of the mobile title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, specifically reimagining its first story arc, known as 'Lapis.' The game features entirely new graphics and a significant amount of new music. Gameplay centers on a strictly turn-based battle system that eschews the Active Time Battle (ATB) mechanic in favor of a more deliberate pace. This system includes a 'stagger' bar, which players use to stun enemies and disrupt incoming attacks.
A Bridge Between Eras
The narrative follows protagonists Rain, Lasswell, and Fina as they strive to protect the world's crystals following the destruction of one by the Veritas of the Dark. This project follows a growing trend at Square Enix of converting mobile assets into full console experiences, a strategy previously seen with Octopath Traveler 0's utilization of Champions of the Continent assets.
One of the game's standout features is the 'Visions' mechanic. This system allows players to summon the ghosts of iconic characters from previous Final Fantasy entries to gain additional abilities. During the Gamescom demo, the Visions of the Warrior of Light, Cloud, and Noctis were specifically showcased as playable assets.
The Return to Tradition
For the broader industry and fanbase, Resonance represents a calculated pivot back to pixel-art aesthetics and classic combat. Since the series began shifting away from these elements in 1997, there has been a persistent demand from fans for a classic-style experience. By blending the nostalgia of the early entries with modern HD-2D fidelity, Square Enix is filling a specific void in its current portfolio.
While some may view the project as a fanservice-driven exercise, early impressions suggest more depth. A writer for Eurogamer noted that while they initially feared the game would be a "cynical, fanservice cash-in," they found an interesting and fresh conceit hidden beneath the callbacks to the series' history.
Looking Ahead
As the industry watches the success of the HD-2D style in other Square Enix titles, Final Fantasy Resonance serves as a litmus test for whether the mainline series can successfully integrate these aesthetics. While the core mechanics and art style have been demonstrated, further details regarding the full release date and platform availability remain to be confirmed.
