Stonemason crafts Steam Machine faceplates from Michelangelo-grade marble

Professional artisan /u/GinoWT blends traditional luxury stone with Valve's open hardware design.

A professional stonemason has elevated gaming hardware aesthetics by crafting custom faceplates for the Steam Machine using high-end marble. The project, shared by Reddit user /u/GinoWT, transforms the console's exterior into a piece of luxury art using materials typically reserved for fine sculpture.

The artisan produced the faceplates using three distinct types of stone: Sahara Noir, Roman Travertine, and Statuario marble. The Statuario piece is particularly notable, as it was sourced from the Carrara quarry basin—the same region where Michelangelo selected the marble for his most famous works. To ensure the plates are durable and practical for a consumer electronic device, each marble slab is cut to a thickness of 5–6mm and bonded to a 3D-printed faceplate. This hybrid construction method reduces the overall weight of the component and prevents the stone from cracking under stress.

Open Design Philosophy

This project is a direct result of Valve's design philosophy for the Steam Machine. Upon the hardware's release, Valve provided official 3D print files for interchangeable faceplates, explicitly encouraging the community to design and manufacture their own custom shells. While the vast majority of users have utilized standard plastics or resins for these modifications, /u/GinoWT leveraged a professional background in stonemasonry to experiment with luxury minerals.

Craftsmanship Meets Gaming

The intersection of traditional craftsmanship and modern gaming hardware highlights the extensibility of open-design hardware. By moving beyond synthetic materials, the project demonstrates how professional artisans can repurpose industrial design files to create bespoke, high-value physical goods. It shifts the conversation of "modding" from simple software or plastic tweaks to the realm of fine art and architectural materials.

Availability and Next Steps

Following the positive reception of the designs, the creator has announced plans to produce a limited run of these luxury plates. A small batch will be made available for purchase through a dedicated sign-up list and website. Potential buyers will be able to choose from the various stone types to customize their hardware's appearance.
