Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis blends classic nostalgia with divisive modern tropes

A first look at the upcoming reimagining reveals a return to the series' roots hampered by 'reboot-era' mechanics.

Amazon Game Studios is preparing to revive one of gaming's most iconic franchises with Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a project that aims to bridge the gap between the series' 1996 origins and modern design. The title arrives as the franchise celebrates its 30th anniversary, attempting to reconcile the purity of the original puzzle-platforming with the expectations of a contemporary audience.

During a hands-off demo at Gamescom, Eurogamer provided a first look at the title, which features a reimagined version of the series' classic Greece level. Developed by Flying Wild Hog under the oversight of Crystal Dynamics, the game is scheduled for release early next year. The preview highlighted a significant shift in presentation, featuring high visual fidelity and a return to the original tone of the series. Additionally, Alix Wilton Regan has stepped in as the new voice actor for Lara Croft.

A Clash of Eras

The project comes at a pivotal moment for the franchise. For years, the series was defined by a divisive set of 'reboot' games from Crystal Dynamics that pivoted away from the cerebral exploration of the 90s toward a more dour, cinematic tone and RPG-lite systems. Legacy of Atlantis is positioned as a way to 'reignite' the experience for veteran players while remaining accessible to newcomers. Jeff Adams, Experience Director at Crystal Dynamics, stated that the team seeks to preserve what made the original locations special while finding "new ways to surprise and delight."

Modern Bloat in a Classic Shell

Despite the nostalgic framing, the demo revealed a heavy reliance on modern gaming tropes that have sparked criticism. The game introduces a scanner for analyzing the environment and its history, skill trees, and Quick Time Events (QTEs). Perhaps most controversially, the title includes a crafting system specifically for foods that grant boons, as well as the incorporation of 'gen-AI' elements.

For core fans, these additions represent a potential clash. The original Tomb Raider was celebrated for its starkness and the player's reliance on intuition and map-reading. By layering in 'bloated' mechanics from the reboot era, Amazon risks alienating the very veterans they hope to attract, trading the purity of a classic puzzle-platformer for a checklist of contemporary industry trends.

The Road to Release

As the early next year release date approaches, the industry will be watching to see if the core gameplay loop can survive the weight of these additional systems. While the visual overhaul and tonal shift are promising, it remains to be seen whether the 'gen-AI' elements and crafting systems enhance the exploration or simply distract from it. The ultimate success of Legacy of Atlantis will depend on whether it feels like a genuine evolution of the 1996 classic or merely a relic of modern design trends.
