Agility Robotics targets $2.5 billion valuation as co-founder calls for industry 'reality check'

As the industry leans into social-media-friendly showcases, Hurst is positioning his company's robot, Digit, as a practical industrial tool designed for the rigors of warehouses and factories.
To fuel this transition from laboratory curiosity to commercial product, Agility Robotics is preparing to go public via a SPAC merger with Churchill Capital Corp XI. The move carries a valuation of $2.5 billion. Having already raised approximately $390 million from early investors, the company now aims to secure roughly $600 million in gross proceeds through the public offering. This financial push coincides with the operation of "RoboFab," a production facility in Salem, Oregon, which is capable of manufacturing 10,000 robots per year.
The shift toward utility
Agility Robotics emerged a decade ago from a robotics lab at Oregon State University. While the company remains rooted in Oregon, it has recently expanded its software engineering presence to Fremont, California, to tap into a deeper pool of specialized technical talent. This expansion comes as the company attempts to differentiate Digit from the speculative nature of the broader humanoid market.
Central to this strategy is the removal of operational barriers. Hurst notes that a humanoid robot is significantly more valuable when it does not require a safety cage to operate. To achieve this, the company has engineered Digit v5 to specifically monitor and watch out for human colleagues, allowing the machine to work alongside people in open environments.
The commercial litmus test
The financial stakes for Agility are high, particularly as it navigates a market where SPAC-led ventures have seen mixed results. The company is betting on a clear cost-benefit analysis to attract industrial adopters. A Digit robot costs approximately $400,000 to purchase and operate over its lifetime, with Agility targeting a return on investment of under two years when compared to human labor paid at $30 per hour.
This focus on the bottom line serves as a litmus test for the entire sector. If Agility can prove that humanoid robots are profitable industrial tools rather than expensive novelties, it could validate the high valuations currently seen across the industry. However, the company's success depends on whether the market prioritizes these concrete metrics over the "storytelling" Hurst seeks to dismantle.

While the production capacity at RoboFab is established, the scale of real-world adoption in factories remains the primary unknown.
