Meta Unlocks 240Hz Refresh Rates for Quest 3 in Horizon OS 2.7
A new software update pushes Quest 3 display capabilities beyond 200Hz, though hardware limits still constrain the Quest 3S.
Meta has released a significant update to Horizon OS 2.7 that unlocks "Extended Refresh Rates" for the Quest 3 headset. The update reveals that the device's hardware is capable of far higher performance than previously advertised, offering a substantial boost in visual fluidity for compatible users.
For standard users, the Quest 3 now supports a maximum refresh rate of 207Hz while maintaining full native resolution. Users who enable developer mode and utilize display scaling—a process that reduces the overall resolution—can push the headset even further to a maximum of 240Hz. This update is exclusive to the Quest 3; it does not apply to the Quest 2 or the budget-friendly Quest 3S. The Quest 3S is excluded from the update because its specific display panel is hardware-limited to 120Hz.
The Role of Refresh Rates in VR
High refresh rates are critical in virtual reality because they reduce motion blur and can significantly decrease the incidence of motion sickness for sensitive users. While 120Hz has been a benchmark for high-end VR since 2021, very few native applications have been fully optimized to take advantage of those speeds. By unlocking rates above 200Hz, Meta is providing a ceiling that far exceeds current native app requirements, shifting the focus toward how the hardware handles external data streams.
Impact on PC VR Streaming
While native Quest apps may struggle to hit these new targets, the update provides a major advantage for PC VR streaming, where a powerful external computer handles the rendering. Virtual Desktop, a popular streaming tool, has already integrated support for 144 FPS to leverage this increased headroom.
However, bottlenecks remain in the data pipeline. Guy Godin, a developer for Virtual Desktop, confirmed the addition of 144 FPS support but noted that video decoders generally struggle beyond that point. This suggests that while the display can handle extreme refresh rates, the Quest 3's current architecture may make framerates significantly higher than 144 FPS impractical for streaming.
What to Watch
Industry observers will now be looking to see if other third-party streaming applications follow Virtual Desktop's lead in implementing higher framerate support. While the hardware capability is now confirmed, the actual user experience will depend on whether software developers can optimize the data pipeline to feed the display without hitting decoder limits. It remains to be seen if Meta will introduce further optimizations to the SoC to better support these extreme refresh rates in native titles.
