Agtonomy enables autonomous multi-point turning for tight-space farming

Agtonomy has updated its commercial off-road platform to include fully autonomous multi-point turning and enhanced passive data collection. The update allows autonomous vehicles to execute complex maneuvers in confined spaces without human intervention, solving a primary bottleneck in specialty crop management.

The new multi-point turning feature enables vehicles to perform precise reverse maneuvers in tight areas, such as orchard headlands. This capability makes previously inaccessible acreage usable for growers by allowing machines to pivot and reposition in spaces where traditional autonomous systems often fail. To achieve this, Agtonomy retrofits vehicles from OEM partners Kubota and Bobcat with its proprietary autonomy packages. The platform's versatility is further extended by the Agtonomy Implement Library, which now supports over 500 implements, ranging from ground-engaging discs to air blast sprayers.

The Data Engine

Beyond navigation, the company is leveraging massive amounts of field data to refine its physical AI. Each operating vehicle processes more than 2 terabytes of data per hour to feed the commercial autonomy platform. This continuous loop of real-world operational data allows the system to improve iteratively, ensuring that the AI adapts to the unpredictable terrain of active farms.

This approach is already being deployed in commercial settings. Joel Carter, orchard operations manager at Okanagan Specialty Fruits, stated that Agtonomy has "completely changed the way we approach data collection in the orchard." The company currently uses Agtonomy-enabled equipment for 100% of its crop data collection jobs, demonstrating the reliability of the system in a production environment.

Industry Implications

Solving the "tight headland" problem is critical for the specialty crop sector, particularly in vineyards and orchards where space is limited. By automating complex turning and scaling data collection, Agtonomy reduces labor costs and increases operational capacity for smaller farming operations. This is especially vital for growers who cannot afford the massive infrastructure changes often required by other autonomy systems.

Agtonomy's strategy moves away from infrastructure-heavy autonomy, instead focusing on vision-based navigation and connectivity via cellular networks and Starlink. This allows the technology to be deployed in rugged, off-road environments with minimal site preparation, lowering the barrier to entry for precision agriculture.

Future Outlook

As the platform continues to ingest terabytes of data from the field, Agtonomy aims to provide deeper insights to its ecosystem partners. The company is positioning its technology as a practical, immediate solution rather than a distant promise.

"Growers don’t have time to wait for innovation to show up in the field," said Tim Bucher, co-founder and CEO of Agtonomy. "They need autonomous fleets that work today and get better tomorrow."
