Atlanta Experts Use Virtual Reality to Confront Legacy of Redlining
An interdisciplinary forum explored how historic housing discrimination continues to drive health disparities across the city.
The Atlanta Regional Collaborative for Health Improvement (ARCHI) and Morehouse School of Medicine convened on August 7 at Friendship Baptist Church to examine the enduring link between historic redlining and modern health inequities. The event, titled "From Redlining to Health Equity: Atlanta’s Past, Present, and Path Forward," brought together researchers and public health experts to discuss how systemic housing discrimination continues to shape medical outcomes in Atlanta today.
A central highlight of the forum was a presentation by Dr. Sun Joo Ahn of the University of Georgia, who detailed research into the use of virtual reality (VR) as a tool for building empathy. Dr. Ahn’s work explores how immersive technology can simulate the lived experiences of those affected by redlining, moving beyond traditional avatar-based models to create a deeper understanding of systemic hardship.
The Legacy of Redlining
Redlining was a legalized process of systematically denying credit, insurance, and investment to specific neighborhoods based on race or ethnicity. In Atlanta, this practice created a geographic divide that persists decades later. These historic boundaries have evolved into modern disparities in life expectancy and general health outcomes between predominantly white and Black neighborhoods.
These gaps are often driven by social determinants of health, including substandard housing and limited access to reliable transportation. Because these factors are direct legacies of the original discriminatory maps, the physical environment of a neighborhood continues to dictate the health trajectory of its residents.
Shifting Institutional Responsibility
The forum emphasized that achieving health equity requires more than just treating patients; it requires a fundamental shift in how healthcare systems operate. Dr. Tabia Henry Akintobi of Morehouse School of Medicine, a leading expert in community-centered public health, presented on the necessity of moving the burden of navigating fragmented care away from marginalized individuals.
Rather than expecting patients to overcome systemic hurdles, Dr. Akintobi argued for relocating that responsibility to the institutions themselves. This approach forces healthcare systems to change their operational structures to better serve underserved populations, ensuring that the system adapts to the patient rather than the reverse.
The Path Forward
By combining data archives with immersive technology like VR, researchers hope to make the invisible barriers of redlining visible to policymakers and providers. The interdisciplinary approach suggests that when stakeholders can virtually experience the daily realities of marginalized residents, they are more likely to support systemic changes.
Future efforts will focus on integrating these empathy-building tools with policy reforms to dismantle the structural barriers that continue to impact the health of Atlanta's residents. By bridging the gap between data and lived experience, the collaborative aims to turn historical awareness into actionable public health strategy.
