BRAVO Education Foundation secures $30,000 grant for VR career training in Clarendon County

The BRAVO Education Foundation of Clarendon County has secured a $30,000 grant from Power:Ed, the philanthropic arm of SC Student Loan, to launch a virtual reality-driven career exploration initiative. The program aims to dismantle economic barriers for rural residents by providing immersive technical training and direct pathways to local employment.

Named "Empowering Clarendon," the initiative will integrate Transfr’s Trek VR platform into two primary educational pipelines: the Adult Ed Center’s Career Hub and the curricula for middle school Global Career Development Facilitators. By utilizing these simulations, participants can earn digital credentials and gain hands-on experience in high-demand sectors, specifically manufacturing, logistics, and healthcare. The goal is to ensure all South Carolinians have the opportunity to succeed and thrive by reducing systemic barriers to entry in the workforce.

Addressing Rural Economic Barriers

Clarendon County has long struggled with systemic economic challenges, including low wages and low educational attainment. These factors have historically created a disconnect between local learners and modern employers, often resulting in "brain drain," where skilled individuals leave the region to find viable work. Power:Ed has committed to awarding a total of $1,425,000 in grants to South Carolina education and career readiness nonprofits throughout the 2026-27 fiscal year. The organization has already begun this rollout, awarding nine grants totaling $527,000 during the first quarter of the fiscal year.
