VR Pioneer Polyarc Shuts Down After 11 Years
The Seattle-based studio closes its doors months after releasing the first non-VR title in the Moss series.
Polyarc, the Seattle-based studio renowned for the critically acclaimed Moss VR series, announced its permanent shutdown on September 11, 2026. The closure marks the end of a decade-long run for one of the industry's most respected virtual reality specialists.
The studio's dissolution comes shortly after the July 16, 2026, launch of Moss: The Forgotten Relic. In a strategic pivot, this final title was the studio's first non-VR release, designed to bring the franchise to flat-screen audiences on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch, and the Nintendo Switch 2. In a farewell statement shared via LinkedIn, Polyarc described the experience of the last 12 years as a "joyous rollercoaster of emotions," noting that as they wind down active development, the team is saying their final farewells.
A Legacy of VR Innovation
Founded in 2015 by Tam Armstrong, Chris Alderson, and Danny Bulla, Polyarc carved out a unique niche in the gaming landscape by focusing on emotional storytelling and tactile presence. The studio first gained widespread recognition with the 2018 release of the original Moss for PlayStation VR, which set a high bar for narrative depth in virtual reality. They followed this success in 2022 with Moss: Book II, further cementing their reputation as leaders in the VR space.
Industry Instability
The closure of a high-profile specialist like Polyarc is not an isolated event but reflects a broader trend of instability across the gaming sector. Throughout 2025 and 2026, the industry has been plagued by widespread layoffs and studio closures. Polyarc's exit highlights the precarious nature of VR-focused development; despite producing critically acclaimed content and attempting to diversify their reach with non-VR titles, maintaining long-term commercial viability remains a significant challenge for boutique studios.
The Path Forward
With the studio now closed, the future of the Moss intellectual property remains uncertain. While Moss: The Forgotten Relic provides a bridge for non-VR players to experience the world of the series, it is unclear if the franchise will continue under a different banner or remain a completed legacy. For now, the industry loses a pioneer that proved VR could be more than a gimmick, delivering genuine emotional resonance through a digital lens.
