Catalonia opens AI-driven Enolab.cat research winery in Falset
A €4 million investment transforms a former textile factory into a digital hub for sustainable enological innovation.
The Government of Catalonia, the Falset City Council, and the Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology (IRTA) have launched Enolab.cat, a digital and sustainable enological research center. The initiative aims to modernize the region's wine production by integrating artificial intelligence and data-driven science into traditional winemaking.
Backed by a public investment of 4 million euros, the center is established within the former Falbar textile factory in Falset. The facility spans more than 1,000 square meters and features a sensorized experimental winery, multidisciplinary laboratories, and a specialized digital platform. To enhance its technical capabilities, the project includes a collaboration with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center to develop AI-powered predictive models for winemaking.
Sectoral Context
This move comes as Catalonia seeks to safeguard a critical economic pillar. The region's wine sector currently comprises over 750 wineries, generating annual revenues that exceed 1.2 billion euros. Despite this economic weight, the industry has historically lacked a unified infrastructure capable of integrating high-level research, active production, and comprehensive data management into a single ecosystem. The choice of location is also symbolic of urban renewal; the Falbar factory had remained largely unused since its closure in 2011 before the Falset City Council acquired the site in 2022.
