Montclair State University opened a new virtual reality learning facility on September 1, 2026, to integrate immersive technology into its academic curriculum. The center transforms traditional coursework into experiential learning, preparing students for the demands of the digital media economy.

The 2,450-square-foot facility features a 26-seat classroom and a specialized free-roam pod. Developed in partnership with Dreamscape Learn, the lab cost approximately $2.96 million to construct and outfit. Funding for the project was supported in part by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority through the "New Jersey Film Works Grant Program."

A New Approach to Curriculum

The facility allows the university to deploy highly specialized courses, such as "Biology in the Alien Zoo," which utilizes VR to conduct virtual fieldwork and data analysis. Beyond the student experience, the lab serves as a technical training ground. Students will use the space to master the backend of immersive media, gaining hands-on experience in storyboarding, designing, and coding VR content.

President Jonathan Koppell stated that the university is "committed to driving a culture of innovation in everything we do." This sentiment is echoed by Josh Reibel, CEO of Dreamscape Learn, who noted that Montclair is investing in an approach that turns curriculum into experiences students live rather than lectures they sit through.

Industry and Academic Impact

The move reflects a broader strategic effort within New Jersey to strengthen its digital media industry. By providing professional-grade tools for VR creation, Montclair aims to bridge the gap between academic theory and the technical requirements of the tech-driven economy. This shift from passive to active learning is intended to improve academic outcomes by allowing students to interact with complex data and environments in three dimensions.

The Path Forward

Montclair joins a group of institutions, including Arizona State University, Rowan University, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, that have adopted Dreamscape Learn's framework. As the facility becomes fully operational, the university will monitor how these immersive tools affect student retention and mastery of complex subjects across various disciplines. The long-term goal remains the establishment of a pipeline of skilled VR creators capable of entering the professional workforce immediately upon graduation.
