Montclair State University Opens $2.96 Million VR Learning Lab

Partnering with Dreamscape Learn, the university integrates haptics and immersive simulations into its digital media curriculum.

Montclair State University opened a 2,450-square-foot virtual reality learning facility on September 1, 2026. Located in the College of Communication and Media building, the lab aims to prepare students for an evolving digital media landscape through experiential learning.

Developed in partnership with Dreamscape Learn, the facility features a 26-seat classroom and a specialized free-roam pod. This pod utilizes 360-degree motion-capture technology and advanced haptics to immerse students in simulated environments. The total cost to construct and outfit the lab was approximately $2.96 million. Funding for the project was split between a $1 million grant from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority's New Jersey Film Works Grant Program, $500,000 from Dreamscape Learn, and just under $1.5 million provided by the university. Additionally, the university is paying a $560,000 licensing fee for Dreamscape Learn content for the 2026-27 academic year.

Immersive Curriculum

The lab is part of a strategic effort to integrate immersive technology into higher education. Through its partnership with Dreamscape Learn—a joint venture between Arizona State University and Dreamscape Immersive—the university is introducing specialized coursework. One such example is "Biology in the Alien Zoo," a course that uses simulation to teach scientific concepts and data analysis. The facility was supported by Walter Parkes, the chairman of Dreamscape Learn and a co-founder of DreamWorks.

Preparing for an Uncertain Market

The investment reflects a shift toward providing students with a "deep tool chest" of technical skills, including coding, design, and storyboarding. This approach is designed to insulate graduates against the disruptions caused by AI and robotics in the traditional job market. Walter Parkes noted that because it is unclear which jobs will be replaced by automation, providing students with these versatile technical capabilities is the best way to help them navigate an uncertain professional future.

The Future of Experiential Learning

University leadership views the lab as a primary vehicle for improving student outcomes by moving beyond traditional lecture-based instruction. Montclair State President Jonathan Koppell stated that engaging students by placing them within a story and allowing them to apply lessons from chemistry and biology has been proven to enhance learning.

Moving forward, the university will monitor how these immersive tools impact student performance in digital media and VR careers. While the initial licensing and construction costs are established, the long-term integration of these simulations across other academic departments remains a key area to watch.
