KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh has integrated advanced augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technology into its studio to modernize weather forecasting. The upgrade replaces static backgrounds with a dynamic digital environment that responds in real-time to camera and presenter movement.
To achieve this, the station installed what First Alert Meteorologist Ray Petelin describes as a "green auditorium" rather than a traditional screen. The space measures 35 feet wide, 28 feet deep, and 14 feet tall. The system relies on 18 trackers embedded in the lighting grid to precisely position graphics relative to the people in the studio. Additionally, meteorologists use trackers on iPads, and the camera is equipped with a "spider" tracker, allowing the camera to move through the forecast without losing visual alignment.
The Shift from Static Screens
Traditional green screen technology is fundamentally fixed. When a camera zooms or pans in a standard setup, the background remains static, which often creates a visual disconnect where the presenter appears to float or scale incorrectly against the map. By transitioning to a larger, tracked environment, KDKA allows the virtual background to scale and shift synchronously with the camera's physical movement, eliminating the traditional limitations of the medium.
The Impact of Gamified Broadcasting
This implementation represents a broader shift toward "gamified" broadcasting, where the line between physical studios and digital assets is blurred. The graphics are rendered by computing power of the same caliber used for high-end VR video games. By leveraging this level of processing and precise spatial tracking, local news stations can move beyond flat maps to provide more intuitive and visually engaging data visualizations, which is particularly useful for illustrating complex weather patterns.
