Samsung Developing AI Smart Glasses With Color Microdisplays
The tech giant is planning a second-generation wearable featuring ultra-small panels for notifications and navigation.
Samsung is developing a new generation of AI-powered smart glasses featuring a built-in color microdisplay, marking a significant escalation in its wearable strategy. The project aims to move beyond simple audio interfaces to provide a visual layer of information directly in the user's line of sight.
Samsung has tasked its own display division, Samsung Display, with the creation of ultra-small panels measuring 0.2 inches or smaller. These microdisplays are not intended for high-fidelity multimedia consumption; instead, they are designed to handle essential system icons, text notifications, and navigation arrows. To achieve this, Samsung is evaluating two primary hardware paths: OLEDoS (OLED-on-Silicon) and LEDoS (LED-on-Silicon) technologies. The company is targeting a market launch window between the second half of 2027 and the first half of 2028.
A Staged Market Entry
This color-display project represents the second phase of Samsung's entry into the smart eyewear market. It is distinct from the company's first-generation effort, known as "Intelligent Eyewear." Developed in partnership with Google, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker, that initial project focuses primarily on camera and voice functions and does not include a display. By splitting these efforts, Samsung is running two parallel tracks: a voice-centric accessory and a more ambitious visual wearable.
Shifting the AI Interaction
This move signals Samsung's intent to compete with existing AI wearables, such as Meta's Ray-Ban AI glasses. While current market leaders often rely on audio feedback and cameras, the integration of a color display transforms the device from a simple accessory into an "AR-lite" tool. This shift allows users to interact with AI-driven notifications and GPS directions without the friction of checking a smartphone screen, potentially altering the daily habits of mobile users.
The Road to 2027
As Samsung leverages its internal display expertise to miniaturize these panels, the industry will be watching to see which silicon-based display technology ultimately wins out. While the core project is underway, the final specifications of the user interface and the integration of the AI software remain to be seen. For now, the focus remains on the technical feasibility of the 0.2-inch panels and the coordination between Samsung's hardware and software divisions ahead of the 2027-2028 launch window.
