UNC Chapel Hill uses VR to transport religious studies students to Nepal

Students in a religious studies course at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are exploring the landscapes of Nepal without leaving the classroom. By integrating virtual reality technology, the university is merging traditional academic study with immersive, experiential learning.

The initiative took place within RELS 283: The Buddhist Tradition: India, Nepal, and Tibet. Students utilized a detailed 3D model of the Swoyambhu Stupa in Kathmandu, Nepal, to experience the site's architecture and atmosphere. The project was led by Lauren Leve, an associate professor of religious studies, who collaborated with Jim Mahaney from UNC's computer science department to provide the technical infrastructure for the simulation.

The Role of Digital Preservation

Beyond its immediate use as a teaching tool, the VR project serves as a digital archive. Because the Swoyambhu Stupa is located in a region prone to seismic activity and environmental degradation, the 3D model acts as a preservation record. This ensures that a precise digital version of the site exists should the physical structure be damaged or destroyed by natural disasters.

Impact on Humanities Education

This application of VR represents a shift in how humanities and sociological studies are approached in higher education. By making inaccessible global sites available to students, the university can simulate cultural immersion that would otherwise require significant funding and travel. This approach allows students to engage with the spatial and physical realities of religious sites, deepening their understanding of the Buddhist tradition through a tactile, visual medium.

Future Outlook

As the collaboration between the religious studies and computer science departments continues, the university may expand these immersive tools to other global sites. While the current focus remains on the Swoyambhu Stupa, the project demonstrates the viability of using high-fidelity 3D modeling to supplement theoretical curricula in the humanities. By bridging the gap between the textbook and the terrain, UNC is redefining the boundaries of the classroom, ensuring that the study of global faith is as much about spatial experience as it is about textual analysis.
