VR Experience at Reunification Palace Recreates 1945 Independence Proclamation
A new immersive program allows visitors to virtually witness President Ho Chi Minh's historic address at Ba Dinh Square.
The Reunification Palace in Ho Chi Minh City recently hosted a virtual reality experience titled "Return to the Sacred Moment," transporting visitors back to the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. The program was launched to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and the nation's National Day.
Directed by the Voice of Vietnam (VOV), the immersive installation took place from August 19 to August 21, 2025. The VR technology recreates the atmosphere of Ba Dinh Square on September 2, 1945, specifically allowing users to witness the reading of the Declaration of Independence by President Ho Chi Minh. By simulating the sights and sounds of the historic gathering, the event aimed to provide a visceral connection to one of the most pivotal moments in Vietnamese history.
The Digital Shift in History
This initiative is part of a broader effort to commemorate the "Autumn of 1945," a period defined by the August Revolution and the subsequent establishment of the state. Traditionally, these events are marked through static exhibits and textbooks; however, the use of VR at a site as symbolically charged as the Reunification Palace marks a transition toward experiential education. By integrating digital tools into physical historic landmarks, organizers are attempting to bridge the gap between archival records and modern perception.

The shift toward immersive technology is designed to resonate more deeply with younger generations and international tourists who may find traditional museum displays less engaging. According to Nguyen Manh Cuong, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, the significance of the program extends beyond the technology itself. Cuong noted that the experience helps participants gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the contributions and sacrifices made by previous generations, as well as the values they passed down.

As Vietnam continues to digitize its national archives, "Return to the Sacred Moment" serves as a blueprint for how AI and VR can be used for digital preservation.
