Researchers are testing whether virtual reality medical hypnosis (VRH) can alleviate chronic pain and psychological distress for hematology patients confined to protective isolation. The trial aims to provide a non-pharmacological alternative for patients facing the high-stress environment of severe neutropenia.

Conducted at Sévigné Private Hospital in France, the parallel group randomized trial focused on patients with aplasia, defined as neutrophil levels below 0.5 G/L. Participants utilized the HYPNO VR® device, which integrates a VR headset and headphones to deliver customizable visual environments, musical themes, and voice options. The protocol required patients to undergo 20-minute daily sessions of VR hypnosis over a period of three days.

The Challenge of Protective Isolation

Protective isolation is a clinical necessity for hematology patients with aplasia to prevent life-threatening infections. However, the physical and social separation inherent in these rooms often triggers significant anxiety and psychological instability. While medical hypnosis has long been recognized as a tool for managing cancer-related stress, the integration of immersive VR is designed to enhance the accessibility and efficacy of the treatment within a rigid clinical setting.

Measuring Clinical Impact

To determine the effectiveness of the intervention, researchers used the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) as the primary outcome measure, comparing anxiety levels before and after the sessions against a control group. Secondary outcomes focused on physical and chemical dependencies, specifically tracking changes in chronic pain via a visual analogical scale and monitoring the total consumption of analgesic and anxiolytic medications.

Implications for Patient Care

If the trial proves successful, VR hypnosis could offer a scalable method to improve the quality of life for critically ill patients during high-risk treatment phases, such as stem cell transplantation. By providing a digital escape and a psychological tool for pain management, the technology could potentially reduce the medical reliance on pharmacological sedatives and painkillers, which often carry their own set of side effects in immunocompromised patients.
