International Holding Company (IHC) is accelerating the United Arab Emirates' push into space infrastructure through its backing of Marlan Space. The Abu Dhabi-based investment firm is positioning the UAE as a primary manufacturer of satellite technology, moving the nation beyond its role as a consumer of foreign aerospace hardware.

In a strategic expansion of its space capabilities, Marlan Space has partnered with US-based Loft Orbital to establish Orbitworks, a joint venture dedicated to the mass production of satellites. According to reports from Zawya and Satellite Today, the new entity is supported by an initial investment exceeding $100 million. Based in the UAE, Orbitworks will focus on the production of commercial Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. Specifically, the venture aims to produce up to 50 satellites annually, with each unit weighing up to 500 kg.

Diversifying the National Economy

This initiative is part of a broader national strategy by the UAE to diversify its economy and reduce its long-term reliance on oil revenues. By investing heavily in the space sector, Abu Dhabi is attempting to build a sustainable high-tech industrial base. The partnership with Loft Orbital allows the UAE to integrate established American aerospace expertise with local capital and infrastructure, speeding up the development of a domestic supply chain for satellite components.

Impact on the LEO Market

The establishment of Orbitworks signals a shift toward the industrialization of space in the Middle East. By creating a domestic mass-production capability, the UAE reduces its dependence on international vendors for critical hardware. This move positions Abu Dhabi as a regional hub for the commercial space value chain, specifically targeting the rapidly growing LEO constellation market, which is essential for global telecommunications, earth observation, and data relay.

Future Outlook

As Orbitworks begins operations, the industry will be watching for the first batch of UAE-manufactured satellites to reach orbit. While the initial investment is set at $100 million, the long-term success of the venture depends on the UAE's ability to attract further technical talent and integrate these satellites into existing global constellations. The project marks a definitive step in the UAE's ambition to become a sovereign provider of space infrastructure.
