Aviation is launching a systemic effort to reduce its climate footprint by targeting the heat-trapping clouds left in the wake of aircraft. Operation Blue Skies, a £5 million program, will implement operational trials in the Shanwick airspace of the eastern North Atlantic during selected evenings and nights in the winters of 2026-27 and 2027-28.

The project focuses on the Shanwick region, which is estimated to account for approximately 5% of global contrail warming. To mitigate this, air traffic controllers from NATS will use AI-generated atmospheric forecasts provided by Google to identify contrail-sensitive regions. Pilots will then be advised to adjust their altitudes by up to 2,000 feet to avoid the specific atmospheric conditions that trigger persistent contrails. While these deviations may increase fuel burn by roughly 100kg per affected aircraft, Paul Hodgson of Google UK stated that the resulting climate benefit is worth the extra fuel.

The hidden cost of contrails

While the industry has traditionally focused on carbon dioxide emissions, non-CO2 effects are increasingly under scrutiny. Contrails form when soot particles from engines trigger ice crystal formation in cold, humid air. While these clouds can reflect some sunlight during the day, their net effect, particularly at night, is to trap heat in the atmosphere. Estimates suggest that contrails account for a significant portion of aviation's total climate impact, with some figures placing the contribution as high as 57%, while others, including Paul Hodgson, suggest it is around one-third.

A high-leverage climate strategy

Addressing contrails offers a relatively low-cost, immediate method to reduce warming compared to the long-term transition to sustainable aviation fuels or the development of entirely new engine technologies. By shifting from voluntary, airline-specific tests to systemic integration within air traffic control, the industry can manage airspace on a scale that maximizes environmental gains. This approach allows for precise adjustments to flight elevation to prevent contrails from forming without requiring a total overhaul of aircraft hardware.

Operation Blue Skies represents a transition toward airspace-scale management of non-CO2 impacts. The success of the 30-month program will depend on the accuracy of Google's AI forecasts and the ability of air traffic controllers to implement altitude shifts without disrupting North Atlantic traffic flow.
