Dephy Launches Sidekick Ankle Exoskeleton for Consumer Mobility

Dephy has introduced the Sidekick, a consumer-grade powered ankle exoskeleton designed to support everyday walking and wellness. Showcased at CES 2026, the system marks a transition for wearable robotics from clinical environments into the general consumer market.

The Sidekick consists of a powered ankle exoskeleton paired with compatible shoes that feature an integrated carbon fiber footplate. According to technical specifications from the Exoskeleton Report, the device provides more than 445 N (100+ lbf) of joint offload to assist with plantar-flexion. Each side of the system weighs 1.4 kg (3.1 lb), a figure that includes the onboard battery. The product is positioned as a mobility augmentation tool rather than a medical device and carries a price tag of $4,500, as reported by PCMag.

The Shift to Consumer Augmentation

For years, exoskeleton technology has been largely confined to two specific sectors: medical rehabilitation for patients with mobility impairments and industrial settings for heavy-lifting support. However, a new trend toward "consumer mobility augmentation" is emerging. The Sidekick enters this space by focusing specifically on the ankle, which is often described as the engine of forward motion. By integrating the robotics into a form factor that resembles standard athletic footwear, Dephy is attempting to lower the psychological and physical barriers to adopting wearable robotics for leisure activities, such as hiking or long-distance walking.

Industry Implications

This release signals a broader industry shift toward making robotic assistance accessible for wellness and performance enhancement. The move suggests that the market is ready for "superhuman" assistance in routine activities, moving beyond the necessity of injury or disability. The Sidekick's entry into the market validates the demand for lightweight, wearable power that can be integrated into a daily wardrobe without the bulk of traditional medical frames.

Future Outlook

Dephy is not the only player exploring this intersection of footwear and robotics. Nike is currently developing a similar product known as Project Amplify. This effort is being pursued in partnership with Dephy, with a public release expected by 2028. As these partnerships mature, the industry will likely see a convergence of high-performance athletic apparel and active robotic assistance, potentially redefining the standard for consumer footwear in the coming years.
