Bangladesh Expands Nuclear Strategy to Healthcare and Agriculture

The government is pivoting beyond power generation to integrate nuclear science into food security and cancer treatment.

Bangladesh is repositioning nuclear science and technology as a primary pillar of its national development strategy. Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam announced that the state will move beyond using nuclear capabilities solely for electricity to integrate these tools into the broader socio-economic fabric of the country.

Speaking at a Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) discussion meeting, Minister Anam stated that nuclear technology possesses "vast potential in food security, agriculture, healthcare, cancer treatment, industry and human resource development." To achieve this, the government plans to merge nuclear science with artificial intelligence, digital technology, and modern research to transition toward a knowledge-based economy.

Energy Infrastructure and SMRs

While the strategic focus is broadening, the government continues to advance its primary energy projects. Fuel loading has been completed at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, with final commissioning pending the completion of technical activities and rigorous safety tests.

Beyond the Rooppur site, Bangladesh is now evaluating the feasibility of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). According to the minister, any decision regarding the adoption of SMRs will be based on a strict assessment of technological capability, economic potential, and safety. Anam emphasized a cautious approach to these advancements, noting that "no decision will be taken in haste on any issue."

Strategic Diversification

This policy shift comes as Bangladesh navigates a persistent energy crisis characterized by shortages of gas and electricity. By leveraging the expertise of the BAEC and the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Scientists Association (BAESA), the government aims to address critical gaps in public health and food production.

The integration of nuclear medicine—specifically for cancer treatment—and agricultural innovation represents a move to diversify the state's technological capabilities. Rather than treating nuclear science as a niche energy solution, the administration is treating it as a multidisciplinary tool to solve systemic issues in healthcare and food security.

Future Outlook

Industry observers will now watch for the formal commissioning of the Rooppur plant and the results of the SMR evaluations. The success of this broader integration depends on the government's ability to successfully bridge the gap between theoretical nuclear research and practical application in the fields of medicine and farming. Whether these ambitions translate into scalable public services remains the primary question for the coming years.
