DGIST Secures Half of All Awards in GRAVITY 2026 Deep-Tech League
The Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology dominated South Korea's largest inter-university student startup competition.
South Korea's premier science and technology institutes have concluded the final rounds of GRAVITY 2026, the nation's largest student startup league. The competition serves as a critical launchpad for deep-tech ventures emerging from the country's elite academic institutions.
DGIST emerged as the most successful institution in the league, securing five of the ten total awards. Among these accolades, the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology earned two "Top Excellence" (최우수상) prizes. The competition, which is jointly hosted by KAIST, DGIST, GIST, and UNIST, provides the top 10 teams with prizes totaling up to KRW 200 million and grants access to global acceleration programs.
A Unified Deep-Tech Ecosystem
The GRAVITY 2026 initiative was established to break down the traditional boundaries of individual universities. By integrating the resources of the "Four Major Science and Technology Institutes," the league creates a collaborative platform designed to support the full lifecycle of a startup, from initial ideation to securing global venture capital investment. The program specifically targets high-barrier sectors including artificial intelligence, robotics, aerospace, and bio/healthcare.
According to Mok Hyeon-seong, DGIST Value Creation Team Leader, the league acts as a practical platform to identify future entrepreneurial talent capable of leading the deep-tech ecosystem beyond the limits of a single campus. Lee Kun-woo, President of DGIST, added that the competition serves as an innovation platform where scientific talent can transform creative ideas into tangible industrial value.
Strategic Shift Toward Commercialization
This competition signals a broader strategic shift within South Korean academia toward the aggressive commercialization of laboratory research. By pooling the expertise of the four top institutes, the government aims to accelerate the transition of academic breakthroughs into global industrial assets. This collaborative approach is intended to reduce the "trial and error" period typically faced by student entrepreneurs when attempting to scale complex technologies.
