DOST Decentralizes Innovation via 2026 Regional Science and Technology Week
The Department of Science and Technology is deploying regional hubs and digital security workshops to empower local MSMEs and researchers.
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is conducting the Regional Science & Technology Week (RSTW) 2026 across the Philippines. The initiative brings science, technology, and innovation (STI) directly to local communities to strengthen regional industries and improve the general quality of life.
Operating under the theme "Siyensya, Teknolohiya at Inobasyon: Kabalikat sa Matatag, Maginhawa, at Panatag na Kinabukasan," the event has seen deployments in several areas, including Ilocos, Central Visayas, and the Zamboanga Peninsula. In the Zamboanga Peninsula, the DOST organized a specialized gathering for Cybersafe Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), focusing on the critical need for digital security and business resilience in an increasingly connected economy. Meanwhile, in Northern Mindanao, the event marked the launch of the first HIRAYA knowledge hub, a dedicated space designed to connect local researchers and foster collaborative innovation.
Decentralizing Innovation
The RSTW is a recurring strategic effort by the DOST to ensure that scientific advancements do not remain confined to urban centers or academic institutions. By decentralizing these resources, the agency ensures that innovations reach the grassroots level. The platform serves as a primary showcase for DOST-assisted projects and provides a direct pipeline for technical assistance to local entrepreneurs, particularly through the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP).
Economic Resilience and Inclusion
Integrating science and technology into regional development is a key component of the Philippines' strategy to build a more inclusive and resilient economy. The specific focus on MSME digitalization in Zamboanga and the establishment of regional knowledge hubs in Mindanao signal a strategic shift toward securing digital infrastructure. By fostering localized research and development, the government aims to empower regions to solve their own specific challenges using data-driven solutions.
The Path Forward
As the RSTW continues its rollout, the focus remains on the long-term sustainability of these regional interventions. DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. emphasized the urgency of these efforts, stating that the Philippines' future depends on the choices made today to strengthen science, technology, and innovation. Observers will be watching to see how the HIRAYA hub scales its research network and whether the digital security frameworks introduced to MSMEs lead to a measurable decrease in regional cyber vulnerabilities.
