DOST Promotes Rural Innovation at 2023 MIMAROPA Science Week

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) convened the 2023 MIMAROPA Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) from May 16 to 18, 2023. Hosted by the Province of Marinduque, the event served as a strategic platform to integrate science, technology, and innovation (STI) programs into the region's rural landscapes.

Under the theme "Agham at Teknolohiya: Kabalikat sa Maunlad at Matatag na Kinabukasan," the celebration attracted more than 1,000 attendees. According to the Philippine Information Agency, the crowd comprised a diverse cross-section of the regional economy, including representatives from local government units (LGUs), micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), community-based enterprises (CBEs), and the academic sector. The gathering focused on showcasing STI programs designed to be accessible and applicable to rural populations.

Bridging the Geographic Divide

The MIMAROPA region—comprising Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan—faces persistent hurdles in technology adoption primarily due to its fragmented geography. To counter this, the DOST-MIMAROPA regional office utilizes outreach initiatives like the RSTW to bridge the gap between high-level scientific research and practical application in isolated communities. By bringing these resources directly to the provinces, the agency aims to drive socioeconomic development and increase agricultural productivity in areas that are often overlooked by urban-centric innovation hubs.

The localization of these celebrations is critical for fostering socioeconomic resilience in isolated provinces. By encouraging the adoption of locally developed technologies, the DOST seeks to alleviate hunger and improve the efficiency of agricultural outputs. Dr. Ma. Josefina P. Abilay, Regional Director of DOST-Mimaropa, emphasized the transformative nature of these efforts, stating that science "is a force that has the ability to create profound positive changes in communities and individuals."
