EQT's Scaleup Europe Fund Debuts With €1 Billion Investment in ICEYE
The Finnish satellite firm reaches a €10 billion valuation as Europe moves to close its late-stage growth capital gap.
The EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund has completed its first investment by co-leading a €1 billion Series F funding round for Finnish satellite company ICEYE. The deal signals a major push to provide the massive growth capital necessary for European tech firms to compete globally.
Of the €1 billion raised, €450 million consists of primary investment, with the remainder coming from secondaries. The funding round values the space intelligence company at more than €10 billion. According to the company, the capital will support an ambitious scaling plan to double annual satellite production from 50 to 100 units by 2028. ICEYE, which specializes in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) constellations, reported revenue exceeding €250 million in 2025. The firm has already demonstrated rapid deployment capabilities, delivering a fully operational sovereign space system to the Polish Armed Forces within 12 months of signing the contract.
Closing the Capital Gap
Founded in 2014, ICEYE provides sovereign intelligence capabilities to seven European nations. The investment comes as the European Union seeks to establish "strategic autonomy" in high-tech sectors. Historically, European "unicorns" have often struggled to find sufficient late-stage funding, leaving them vulnerable to acquisition by non-EU entities or stunted growth.
To counter this, EQT is managing the €5 billion Scaleup Europe Fund, which is specifically designed to back companies in strategically important fields such as AI, quantum computing, and space technology. Victor Englesson, Partner at EQT and Co-Head of the Scaleup Europe Fund, stated that the investment reflects the fund's mission to support ambitious European founders building globally competitive companies in these critical sectors.
Strategic Implications
This move marks a shift in the European venture ecosystem, moving toward the massive capital injections typical of U.S. markets. For ICEYE, the funding accelerates its ability to deploy sovereign intelligence systems globally, reinforcing Europe's position in the competitive defense and space-tech markets. Rafał Modrzewski, Co-Founder and CEO of ICEYE, noted that the window to build sovereign intelligence from space is open now as the industry enters a new era.
What's Next
Industry observers will now watch for further deployments from the €5 billion Scaleup Europe Fund to see which other strategic sectors EQT prioritizes. While ICEYE has secured the capital to scale production, the company's ability to maintain its rapid delivery timeline for other sovereign clients will be a key metric for its continued growth in the defense sector.
