Florida State University Launches State's First Graduate Quantum Credential

The new interdisciplinary certificate aims to build a quantum-ready workforce for computing, security, and industrial applications.

Florida State University has launched the Graduate Certificate in Quantum Science & Technology, the first formal graduate-level credential in quantum information science and engineering in Florida. The program aims to address the growing demand for specialized technical expertise by bridging the gap between theoretical research and industrial application.

Administered by the FSU Quantum Initiative, the program is an interdisciplinary effort drawing resources from the FSU College of Arts and Sciences and the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. The certificate is open to current STEM graduate students and external post-baccalaureate professionals. To support this expansion, FSU has hired ten new faculty members dedicated to its quantum science and engineering investments. Applications for the Spring 2027 cohort are currently being accepted, with a deadline of October 1, 2026.

A Multidisciplinary Infrastructure

The program operates as a hub spanning several critical departments, including physics, chemistry and biochemistry, computer science, mathematics, and materials science and engineering. It also integrates electrical, computer, mechanical, and aerospace engineering. This structure reflects a belief that modern technological challenges cannot be solved within a single discipline, according to Suvranu De, dean of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.

Students in the program have access to world-class infrastructure, including the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and the Interdisciplinary Research & Commercialization Building. These facilities provide essential tools for quantum research, such as dilution refrigerators, nanofabrication facilities, and cleanrooms. This graduate offering is the latest step in a broader educational pipeline that already includes introductory quantum computing courses for high school and undergraduate students.

Economic and National Security Implications

The push for a formal credential comes as quantum technologies move toward practical use in communication, national security, and computing. Professor Michael Shatruk, director of the FSU Quantum Initiative, noted that quantum information science is becoming a foundation for the 21st-century economy. By establishing this credential, FSU aims to position Florida as a hub for quantum innovation.

Stacey S. Patterson, FSU Vice President for Research, stated that the university is positioning itself at the forefront of a transformation that is reshaping the future of materials and computing. The initiative is specifically designed to ensure that the regional workforce possesses the interdisciplinary skills required to compete in a quantum-driven market.

As the first cohort prepares for enrollment in 2027, the university will continue to integrate its research capabilities with workforce training. The success of the program will likely depend on the continued synergy between the university's academic departments and the industrial partners seeking a "quantum-ready" workforce.
