UT Dallas Opens DoD-Backed Battery Hub to Secure U.S. Supply Chains
The new BEACONS facility leverages Pentagon funding to bridge the gap between academic research and scalable battery manufacturing.
The University of Texas at Dallas has launched BEACONS (Batteries and Energy to Advance Commercialization and National Security), a battery prototyping facility designed to accelerate the domestic production of next-generation energy storage. The center aims to reduce U.S. reliance on foreign supply chains, particularly those originating in China, by moving battery development from the lab to the factory floor.
Backed by $30 million in funding from the Department of Defense via the Manufacturing Capability Expansion and Investment Prioritization (MCEIP) initiative, the facility is a collaborative effort between UT Dallas, Associated Universities Inc. (AUI), and LEAP Manufacturing. To handle highly sensitive materials, the center features specialized infrastructure, including a 3,500-square-foot dry room maintained at below 1% relative humidity and a dedicated 400-square-foot solid electrolyte room for handling solid materials used as electrolytes.
The Push for Energy Independence
The launch of BEACONS comes as the U.S. government intensifies efforts to secure national security through supply chain independence. Energy storage is a critical vulnerability, as the current global market is heavily dominated by Chinese manufacturing and mineral processing. By integrating AI tools and geospatial modeling to track critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel, the center seeks to ensure that both defense and commercial battery production remain viable even if foreign supplies are disrupted.
"We want to have that supply chain resilience and independence from the Chinese supply chain," said Kyeongjae Cho, Director of BEACONS.
Scaling Innovation
For the industry, the facility represents a shift from theoretical research to applied, scalable manufacturing. Many promising battery chemistries fail to reach the market because they cannot be produced at scale; BEACONS is designed to solve this "valley of death" by providing the prototyping tools necessary for commercialization. This transition transforms UT Dallas into a national hub for innovation, fostering a domestic ecosystem for both technical prototyping and workforce training.
Tom Campbell, Co-founder of LEAP Manufacturing, emphasized that the facility's opening is only the beginning of a larger strategic effort. "Today it’s not a finish line; however, it’s a starting point," Campbell said. "This is about building, making, and competing globally without relying on foreign supply chains."
Future Outlook
As the facility begins operations, the focus will shift toward testing new materials and refining the manufacturing processes required for high-capacity, secure energy storage. While the initial funding provides a strong foundation, the long-term success of the initiative will depend on how effectively the collaboration between academia and private industry can translate prototypes into mass-market products. Observers will be watching for the first wave of commercially viable technologies to emerge from the hub as the U.S. continues to race toward energy autonomy.
