GalaxEye acquires StarOps to bolster satellite engineering after Drishti failure
The Indian space-tech startup integrates StarOps' indigenous platforms to accelerate its OptoSAR constellation development.
Indian space-tech startup GalaxEye has acquired Bengaluru-based spacecraft engineering firm StarOps to deepen its internal technical capabilities. The move integrates StarOps' satellite platforms and engineering expertise into GalaxEye's operations to streamline the development of advanced space systems.
StarOps brings a portfolio of qualified satellite bus platforms across three weight classes: 50 kg, 150 kg, and 250 kg. A key asset of the acquisition is the high level of domestic production, with StarOps having achieved over 66% indigenization across its satellite systems. The incoming team includes engineers with a pedigree from TeamIndus, specifically those who worked on Lunar Lander and Rover projects. Nirmal Suraj Gadde, Co-founder and Missions Lead at StarOps, noted that the team is bringing experience built from "first principles" to support GalaxEye's goal of deploying a constellation of OptoSAR satellites.
Recovery from Mission Drishti
The acquisition follows a significant technical setback for GalaxEye. The company lost contact with its Mission Drishti satellite due to a geomagnetic solar storm anomaly that occurred during the Launch and Early Orbit Phase (LEOP). The acquisition of StarOps is specifically intended to strengthen GalaxEye's satellite engineering and operational resilience following this loss.
GalaxEye, founded in 2021, is focused on developing OptoSAR technology. This proprietary approach combines Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical imaging on a single platform, allowing for all-weather, day-and-night Earth observation. By absorbing StarOps, which was incorporated in 2022 to indigenize critical spacecraft technologies, GalaxEye aims to reduce its reliance on global supply chains.
Strategic Implications
This vertical integration allows GalaxEye to control the end-to-end mission execution process, from initial design to final operation. Suyash Singh, Co-founder and CEO of GalaxEye, stated that welcoming the StarOps team significantly strengthens the company's capabilities, enabling it to build advanced space systems in India for a global market. This shift reflects a broader trend within the Indian private space sector, where startups are moving away from niche component manufacturing toward becoming fully integrated system providers to better compete in the commercial and defense Earth observation markets.

The primary objective remains the deployment of a fleet capable of high-resolution, all-weather imaging.
