NASA Funds 18 High-Risk Space Tech Concepts with $3.2 Million
The 2026 NIAC Phase I awards fund speculative studies ranging from nuclear spacesuit heaters to solar dimming.
NASA has awarded 18 Phase I grants totaling $3.2 million to fund early-stage studies of high-risk, high-reward space technologies. These investigations aim to identify transformative breakthroughs that could redefine the future of interstellar travel and planetary exploration.
Each of the 18 awards provides up to $175,000 for a nine-month initial investigation. According to NASA, these grants are strictly for concept development studies and do not constitute official missions. The selected projects cover a diverse array of speculative engineering, including "EARENDIL" nuclear spacesuit heaters and a femtosat constellation consisting of 10,000 satellites intended to map Saturn's rings. One particularly ambitious proposal, known as "DimSun," explores the possibility of reducing solar insolation by deploying a controllable dust cloud to dim the sun.
The Innovation Incubator
The NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program serves as an innovation incubator, specifically designed to foster "great leaps" rather than incremental improvements. By targeting speculative but credible technologies, the program seeks to seed ideas that could eventually benefit the broader aerospace economy or support future crewed missions to the Moon and Mars.
Greg Stover, director of the Advanced Research and Technology division at NASA HQ, emphasized the necessity of this approach, stating that achieving future goals "will require more than incremental technological advancement. It means we need great leaps."
Strategic Hedging
These grants allow the agency to explore transformative capabilities—such as exoplanet imaging and interstellar power—without the financial or political risk of committing to full-scale missions. This strategy effectively hedges NASA's bets on future breakthroughs, allowing the agency to vet radical ideas before they are scaled into operational programs.
Phillip Williams, NIAC’s acting program executive, noted that the program allows NASA to "germinate those seeds and determine if there’s something that could be grown to benefit future space missions."
Future Outlook
As these nine-month studies conclude, NASA will evaluate which concepts demonstrate enough technical merit to move toward Phase II funding. While many of these high-risk projects may not reach fruition, the program's success is measured by its ability to identify the few viable technologies that can fundamentally shift the trajectory of human spaceflight.
