The Indian space programme is entering a transformative era as it pivots from satellite deployment toward independent human spaceflight. Led by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the agency is now executing a strategic leap that aims to establish a permanent human presence in low Earth orbit.

At the center of this expansion is the Gaganyaan mission, India's first crewed orbital spacecraft. Parallel to this effort, India is developing the Bharatiya Antariksha Station (BAS). The Indian space programme began in 1963 in Thumba, Kerala, where the first sounding rocket—a Nike-Apache—was launched from the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS). From these modest beginnings, the programme evolved into a global competitor, eventually achieving successful lunar and Martian missions that demonstrated its ability to execute complex, deep-space trajectories on constrained budgets.

Strategic Implications

Achieving independent human spaceflight and operating a sovereign space station would place India within a small, elite group of nations possessing full crewed space capabilities. Beyond the scientific data gathered in microgravity, these milestones enhance India's strategic standing on the global stage.
