India Targets 2035 for Launch of Bharatiya Antariksha Station
ISRO confirms the first module of the sovereign space station has been approved as part of a long-term orbital roadmap.
India is moving to establish a permanent human presence in low Earth orbit with the development of the Bharatiya Antariksha Station (BAS). The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) aims to have the sovereign station fully operational by 2035.
Speaking during the third National Space Day celebrations in Ahmedabad, ISRO Chairman Dr. V Narayanan confirmed that the project is moving into the execution phase. According to Dr. Narayanan, the first module of the proposed space station has already been approved. "The first module has already been approved, and we aim to establish the space station by 2035," the Chairman stated, marking a concrete step toward the facility's construction.
A Strategic Roadmap
This orbital ambition follows a period of significant momentum for India's space program, most notably the success of the Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission. The BAS project is integrated into a broader strategic roadmap that includes the Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission, which serves as the precursor for sending Indian astronauts into space. To support these high-complexity goals, India is increasing the participation of the private sector in space science to complement ISRO's existing operational capacity.
Shifting the Orbital Paradigm
The transition to a sovereign space station represents a fundamental shift in India's approach to astronautics.
