India Shifts from Tech Adopter to Deep-Tech Leader in Quantum and Space

India has transitioned from a late adopter of technology to an early participant in the global race for quantum computing and space innovation. Union Minister Jitendra Singh announced that the nation is now among the first few countries globally to lead in quantum technology, signaling a broader ambition to dominate the next wave of industrial evolution.
Speaking at the 3rd India International FinTech Festival and Digit India’s Top Appliance Awards 2026, Dr. Singh detailed the rapid scaling of India's high-tech capabilities. A primary highlight is the National Quantum Mission, which has established over 1,000 kilometers of secure quantum communication within just three years. This achievement surpasses half of the government's 10-year target of 2,000 kilometers.
Simultaneously, the space economy, currently valued at approximately $9 billion, is projected to surge to between $40 billion and $45 billion by the end of the decade. This growth is supported by a booming entrepreneurial landscape; the Indian startup ecosystem has expanded from roughly 350 startups a decade ago to nearly 2.4 lakh today, including the emergence of space-tech unicorn Skyroot Aerospace.
The Drive for Digital Prosperity
This technological acceleration is part of a strategic government effort to move the country from "digital payments to digital prosperity." According to Dr. Singh, the "fourth industrial revolution" is already underway and will be primarily driven by artificial intelligence and biotechnology. To support this, the government is leveraging a triad of initiatives: the National Quantum Mission, the IndiaAI Mission, and the Bio-E3 initiative, which focuses on biotechnology for economy, employment, and environment. By integrating these fields, India aims to move beyond service-oriented tech roles and establish itself as a primary architect of deep-tech infrastructure.

India's pivot is characterized by a significant opening of traditionally state-controlled sectors to private enterprise. The government is now opening the nuclear sector to private companies to further catalyze technological growth.
