Kenya has accelerated its push toward a tech-driven economy with the conclusion of the 9th Young Scientists Kenya (YSK) National Science and Technology Exhibition. Held at Moi Girls High School in Nairobi, the event underscored the nation's strategic commitment to integrating artificial intelligence into its educational framework.

Under the theme "Shaping Kenya’s AI Future Using STEM," the exhibition featured 154 student-led projects. These finalists were selected from a competitive pool of more than 1,500 submissions from secondary schools across the country. The projects focused on leveraging AI and scientific principles to address critical real-world challenges, specifically within the sectors of healthcare, agriculture, and climate change. In a significant move toward inclusivity, the event included participation from 20 refugee schools located in the Dadaab and Kakuma camps, integrating marginalized youth into the national innovation ecosystem.

The YSK exhibition is an annual initiative designed to shift STEM education from theoretical classroom concepts to practical, scalable applications. This transition is supported by a network of industry partnerships, including collaborations with Safaricom, Oracle, and the KCB Foundation.

Dr. Victor Mwongera, the National Director of Young Scientists Kenya, emphasized that early adoption is key to the technology's success. He noted that learners must grasp AI at a young age, treating it as a practical tool to solve community challenges and navigate their future careers.

This focus on AI-driven solutions, such as precision farming, signals a broader national effort to democratize technology and ensure the future workforce remains competitive in a global economy. Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, Principal Secretary in the State Department for Science, Research and Innovation, described the application of AI to challenges like solar energy and precision farming as "inspiring," noting that the technology is already present and active within the country.
