India Targets 2035 for Full Operationalization of Bharatiya Antariksh Station
ISRO begins a phased rollout of its modular space station to establish a self-reliant human presence in low Earth orbit.
India is developing the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), a modular orbital outpost designed to establish a permanent human presence in low Earth orbit. Led by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the project aims for full operationalization by 2035.
The rollout will proceed in stages, beginning with the launch of the first module, BAS-1, scheduled for 2028. ISRO plans to utilize the LVM3 rocket to deploy this initial unit. To facilitate this first phase, the Union Cabinet approved additional funding of ₹11,170 crore, extending the scope of the existing Gaganyaan programme to include the construction of the station's first unit.
Strategic Shift Toward Self-Reliance
The BAS project follows the Gaganyaan mission, which is tasked with demonstrating India's fundamental human spaceflight capabilities. This transition to a permanent station represents a strategic shift toward 'Aatmanirbhar,' or self-reliance, in space exploration. By developing its own infrastructure, India intends to reduce its long-term dependence on international partners for orbital research and the maintenance of a human presence in space.

Achieving a fully operational space station would place India within an elite group of nations—alongside the United States, Russia, and China—capable of sustaining a permanent human outpost in orbit. Narayanan has confirmed the timeline, stating that India will have its own space station in orbit by that year.
