Indian Startup GalaxEye Wins US Patent for Hybrid OptoSAR Satellite Imaging

Indian space startup GalaxEye has been granted a US patent for its OptoSAR imaging technology, streamlining the acquisition of simultaneous optical and microwave data. The patent marks a significant milestone as the company prepares to deploy a specialized satellite constellation for global Earth observation.

The US patent covers the architecture and system required to align and synchronize optical and microwave sensors. This allows for simultaneous, spatially and temporally matched data acquisition on a single satellite platform. By combining multi-spectral optical imaging—which provides high-resolution visual and spectral data—with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), GalaxEye can capture imagery that penetrates clouds, darkness, and adverse weather. According to Business Standard, GalaxEye is the first Indian startup to receive a US patent for satellite imaging technology.

The End of the Imaging Trade-off

Traditionally, the Earth observation industry has operated under a strict compromise. Optical sensors provide the intuitive clarity and detail required for precise analysis but are rendered useless by cloud cover or nighttime. Conversely, SAR sensors provide all-weather persistence and can see through any atmospheric condition, but the resulting imagery is less intuitive for human analysts.

GalaxEye’s "SyncFused" approach integrates both sensor types into one platform to eliminate this divide. By fusing these data streams, the company creates a new class of imagery that maintains both visual clarity and environmental independence. Suyash Singh, co-founder and CEO of GalaxEye, stated that this integration unlocks a dataset that has never been available before, addressing a long-standing global gap in coverage and continuity.

Implications for Global Intelligence

This technological shift addresses a critical vulnerability in global monitoring and intelligence. By providing continuous, dependable data regardless of environmental constraints, the OptoSAR system removes the reliance on siloed data sources. This has immediate implications for defense and surveillance, where timing is critical, as well as for disaster response, agriculture, and climate intelligence, where cloud cover often obscures urgent data during crises.

The Path to Mission Drishti

The patent provides the technical foundation for "Mission Drishti," GalaxEye's roadmap to scale its capabilities. The company plans to deploy a constellation of 10 all-weather imaging satellites by 2030. This network is designed to enable near real-time data delivery, significantly increasing the frequency of observations.

Singh noted that Mission Drishti represents a global first by integrating radar sensing and optical imaging on a single platform, while also standing as India’s largest privately developed satellite. As the company moves toward its 2030 goal, the industry will be watching to see how this fused data model disrupts the traditional market for separate optical and radar satellite services.
