Gilmour Space and Hypersonix Partner for Sovereign Hypersonic Testing

Two Queensland aerospace firms unite to provide Australian defence and commercial clients a domestic pathway for Mach 5+ flight testing.

Queensland-based aerospace firms Gilmour Space Technologies and Hypersonix have entered a strategic partnership to develop domestic hypersonic flight-test capabilities. The agreement, signed September 8, 2026, establishes a sovereign Australian infrastructure for testing advanced technologies at speeds of Mach 5 and above.

The collaboration integrates Gilmour Space’s expertise in rocket propulsion, launch infrastructure, and mission integration with Hypersonix’s specialized scramjet propulsion and hypersonic vehicle technology. Together, the companies will provide a responsive testing environment for defence and commercial clients to validate high-temperature materials, communications systems, and advanced sensors in representative hypersonic conditions.

Strategic Alignment and Funding

This partnership arrives as Australia intensifies its focus on hypersonic technology to improve the survivability and capabilities of the Australian Defence Force. The initiative aligns with broader strategic goals, specifically those outlined under AUKUS Pillar II, which emphasizes advanced capabilities and joint technological development.

Both Gilmour Space and Hypersonix are portfolio companies of the National Reconstruction Fund (NRF) Corporation, signaling strong federal backing for the venture. Gilmour Space has already secured significant capital to support its growth, including a $75 million investment from the NRF as part of a larger $217 million funding round completed in January 2026. Additionally, Gilmour Space had planned to launch its first hypersonic rocket from its North Queensland spaceport by August 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

Implications for Sovereign Capability

Establishing a domestic hypersonic testbed reduces Australia's reliance on overseas facilities, which often involve restrictive access and long lead times. By creating a local, accessible pipeline for flight testing, the partnership allows for more rapid iteration of critical guidance systems and materials capable of withstanding the extreme thermal loads of hypersonic flight.

"By bringing together our complementary strengths, we can support a broader range of applications, while building sovereign capability that makes Australia a stronger and more valuable partner," said Adam Gilmour, co-founder and CEO of Gilmour Space. Matt Hill, CEO of Hypersonix, added that defence customers specifically require more frequent and responsive ways to test technologies in these extreme environments.

Future Outlook

As the partnership moves forward, the industry will be watching for the successful integration of Hypersonix's scramjet vehicles with Gilmour's launch systems. The primary focus remains the transition from theoretical design to active flight-test data collection. While the framework for the partnership is now in place, the timeline for the first joint flight tests and the specific cadence of available test windows for external clients remain the key milestones to monitor.
