Gilmour Space to Launch Australian Hypersonic Flight Test Service in 2025

Gilmour Space Technologies is launching a dedicated suborbital flight test service in 2025 to provide a critical testing ground for hypersonic technology. The initiative aims to accelerate the development of high-speed aerospace innovations within Australia.
Branded as 'HyPeRsonic FLight Test' (HPRFLT or Hyper Flight), the service will offer a turnkey testbed for commercial and defense customers to evaluate vehicles and materials at speeds above Mach 5. The service will operate from sites within Australia, though specific locations have not yet been announced. The primary goal is to provide a real-life environment where researchers can advance their projects to higher Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs).
The Testing Gap
This move addresses a significant bottleneck in aerospace research. While ground-based shock tunnels and simulations are essential for early-stage development, they possess inherent limitations. These facilities typically provide hypersonic flow for only 200 to 300 milliseconds, which is insufficient for fully validating the thermal and structural endurance of a vehicle during sustained high-speed flight. By moving from the lab to suborbital flight, developers can observe how materials behave under actual atmospheric conditions.
Strategic Implications
This capability arrives during a period of intensified hypersonic research and development, driven in part by the AUKUS security partnership between Australia, the UK, and the US. Establishing a sovereign Australian capability for hypersonic testing reduces strategic reliance on foreign facilities. For the Australian Defence Force and its allies, this means a faster pipeline from conceptual design to deployed technology, as the time spent waiting for access to limited international test ranges is reduced.
David Doyle, Director of Launch Vehicles and Satellites at Gilmour Space, stated that the HPRFLT service is designed to "bridge that gap by providing a real-life environment for researchers and companies to test, demonstrate, and advance their innovations to higher Technology Readiness Levels in Australia."
