LS ELECTRIC's Woojin Park Wins Science and Technology Merit Medal

Woojin Park, Director and Head of the Global Product Development Research Group at LS ELECTRIC, received the Science and Technology Merit Medal on September 7. The honor recognizes Park's pivotal role in localizing core power distribution technologies and pioneering next-generation direct current (DC) power solutions.
The award was presented during the Technology Developers’ Day ceremony, organized by the Korea Industrial Technology Association (KOITA). This year's event marked a significant milestone as the first time Technology Developers’ Day was observed as a statutory national observance in South Korea.
Reducing Import Reliance
Park’s contributions center on the localization of both low- and high-voltage power distribution equipment. His leadership was instrumental in developing domestic versions of gas-insulated switchgear (RMU), vacuum circuit breakers (VCB), and air circuit breakers (ACB), as well as critical arc interruption technologies. By developing these components locally, Park helped reduce South Korea's historical reliance on imported power infrastructure, enhancing the nation's technological self-reliance.
The Shift to DC Power
This recognition comes during a global transition toward eco-friendly power grids and higher power requirements. The rapid expansion of AI data centers has intensified the demand for efficient power management, driving a shift toward DC power solutions. Park's work in this area includes the development of DC 1500V-class ACBs and DSUs, which are designed to meet the rigorous demands of modern digital infrastructure.

Establishing domestic leadership in DC power solutions allows LS ELECTRIC to better compete in the North American and European markets.
