Israel's STEM gender gap rooted in social conditioning, not ability
Data shows a stark disparity in advanced science and math tracks despite nearly equal overall academic eligibility between boys and girls.
Israel faces a persistent gender imbalance in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) that begins long before students reach high school. While academic ability is nearly equal across genders, social conditioning and stereotypes steer girls away from the advanced tracks that serve as gateways to the country's most prestigious careers.
According to data reported by Ynetnews, overall matriculation (Bagrut) eligibility is nearly identical, with 76.4% for boys and 76.1% for girls. However, a significant divide emerges in high-level coursework. Only 15.4% of girls take the highest-level five-unit mathematics exam, compared to 19% of boys. The disparity is even more pronounced in physics, where only 5.7% of girls enter the advanced track, compared to 12.5% of boys. Most strikingly, among students who drop out of five-unit mathematics between the 10th and 11th grades, 78% are girls.
The Roots of the Divide
This gap is not a reflection of innate capability. PISA assessments indicate almost no difference in science performance and only a marginal advantage for boys in mathematics. Instead, the divide is driven by institutional and social factors. Prof. Irit Sasson of Tel-Hai University notes that "this isn’t a gap in ability, but a gap in opportunity."
Contributing factors include a lack of female role models and teaching methods often perceived as masculine. Esti Rabaev, a 12th-grade student, suggests that society has long conditioned people to believe boys are better suited for these subjects and the high-tech sector. These stereotypes often begin in early childhood, influencing everything from toy preferences to how children perceive their own potential in technical fields.
Economic and Strategic Implications
The educational gap creates a cascading effect that limits women's presence in the workforce. As of 2025, women make up 34% of high-tech employees, but their representation drops to 28.4% in critical research and development (R&D) positions. Because STEM education is the primary pipeline to high-paying tech roles and elite military technological units, this early attrition limits women's access to positions of power and decision-making.
For Israel, closing this gap is increasingly viewed as a strategic necessity. As the state seeks to maintain its technological edge and expand its combat and intelligence forces, increasing female participation in cyber and R&D is essential for both national security and sustainable economic growth.
Looking Ahead
Efforts to bridge the divide now focus on intervening earlier in the educational cycle to prevent the mass dropout of girls from advanced math in the 10th grade. While the data confirms a systemic leak in the pipeline, the challenge remains in dismantling the deep-seated social expectations that discourage girls from pursuing the most rigorous technical paths.
