The Expedition 75 crew aboard the International Space Station is preparing for a critical maintenance mission scheduled for August 18, 2026. The upcoming extravehicular activity (EVA) aims to secure the station's communication infrastructure and advance research into human-machine interfaces in microgravity.

NASA astronaut Anil Menon and ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot are scheduled to perform the spacewalk, which is expected to last approximately six-and-a-half hours. The primary objective of the mission is to replace a high-speed space-to-ground antenna located on the Z1 truss. According to NASA, this swap is essential to maintain the high-speed data and communication links between the orbiting laboratory and ground control.

The Role of Advanced Tech

While preparing for the EVA, the crew is simultaneously utilizing the station as a testbed for emerging technologies. Cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina have been utilizing virtual reality headsets as part of the 'Virtual' experiment. This research specifically tests how humans perceive balance and direction while operating in a microgravity environment.

These efforts are part of a broader push to integrate VR into daily station operations. By studying how crew members adapt to these tools, researchers aim to improve overall efficiency and reduce the reliance on constant ground-based guidance.
