Japan to Launch Michibiki 7 Satellite to Bolster Regional Navigation

Japan is preparing to launch the Michibiki 7 navigation satellite from the Tanegashima Space Center to enhance positioning accuracy across the Asia-Pacific. The mission is a critical step in expanding the nation's independent satellite infrastructure.
The satellite will be carried by an H3 rocket manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. According to JAXA, the launch has been rescheduled to August 11, 2026, with a launch window set between 4:00 and 5:30 JST. The primary objective of the mission is to deliver the spacecraft into Geostationary Transfer Orbit.
Expanding the Michibiki Network
The satellite is a key component of the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS), branded as "Michibiki," which means "guidance." Japan is currently expanding this constellation from four spacecraft toward a seven-satellite service. This system is specifically designed to augment the U.S.-operated GPS in the Asia-Pacific region, providing high-elevation visibility that is essential for maintaining signals in mountainous terrain and "urban canyons" where tall buildings often block traditional satellite views.
Strategic Independence
Strengthening the QZSS is a matter of national security and economic stability for Japan. By reducing its exclusive reliance on the American GPS constellation, Japan secures more resilient positioning data for critical infrastructure, including financial systems, transportation networks, and disaster response operations. Beyond the satellite's utility, the mission serves as a high-stakes reliability test for the H3 launch vehicle.
