Kenya Students to Make First Live Radio Contact With ISS

The Kenya Space Agency has secured a rare communication window for Nairobi students to speak with astronauts via amateur radio.

Kenyan students will make history on August 7, 2026, through the country's first live radio communication session with astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The event, coordinated by the Kenya Space Agency (KSA), marks a significant milestone in the nation's efforts to integrate youth into global space exploration.

The contact will take place at the Shree Cutch Satsang Swaminarayan Academy in Nairobi's Lang'ata area. Unlike standard digital communications, the session will utilize specialized amateur radio technology provided by the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) programme. Because the communication depends on the physical trajectory of the station, the students will have a window of only a few minutes to transmit and receive messages as the ISS flies over Kenya. Notably, Kenya is the only African nation selected to participate in the ARISS programme for the 2026 cycle.

A growing space legacy

Kenya's engagement with space science dates back to the 1964 establishment of the Broglio Space Centre in Malindi, but the country has accelerated its capabilities in recent years. The formation of the Kenya Space Agency in 2017 paved the way for the development of the 1KUNS-PF satellite in partnership with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). This momentum culminated in the 2023 launch of Taifa-1, Kenya's first operational Earth observation satellite. Most recently, in April 2026, Kenya joined Egypt and Uganda in deploying the Climate Camera (ClimCam) project to the ISS to enhance environmental monitoring.

Driving STEM in Africa

This initiative is designed to move space science from theoretical textbooks into practical experience, aiming to inspire a new generation of African students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). By facilitating direct contact with astronauts, the KSA intends to demonstrate the tangible utility of space research. For the African continent, these advancements have direct applications in critical sectors, including disaster management, precision agriculture, and more accurate weather forecasting.

Future outlook

As Kenya positions itself as a regional hub for space research, the success of the ARISS contact will serve as a benchmark for future educational outreach. While the August event focuses on communication, the continued integration of Kenyan technology into the ISS—following the ClimCam deployment—suggests a shift toward more active hardware contributions. Observers will be watching to see if this success leads to expanded partnerships with other international space agencies or further satellite deployments to support regional climate goals.
