UC Santa Barbara Proposes 'Pulverize It' Strategy for Planetary Defense
A new terminal defense plan aims to shatter hazardous asteroids into fragments small enough to burn up in Earth's atmosphere.
Researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara, have proposed a radical planetary defense strategy called "Pulverize It." The plan shifts the focus from nudging asteroids off course to shattering them entirely to prevent catastrophic impacts.
Led by Professor Philip Lubin, along with researchers Sasha Cohen and Brin Bailey, the project utilizes simulations supported by the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program. The strategy employs "penetrators" to break hazardous asteroids into small pieces. For smaller threats, the team proposes using passive tungsten bullets; for larger objects, nuclear explosives would be required. The objective is to reduce the asteroid to fragments roughly 13 to 16 feet in diameter, with a maximum size of 50 feet, ensuring the debris burns up upon entering Earth's atmosphere. To deliver these projectiles, the team suggests leveraging existing rocket technology, such as SpaceX's Falcon 9.
The Shift to Terminal Defense
Traditionally, planetary defense has relied on kinetic impactors—exemplified by NASA's DART mission—which aim to nudge an asteroid into a different orbit. While effective, deflection requires significant lead time to be successful. If an asteroid is detected too late, or if the object is too massive for a simple nudge, traditional methods may fail. "Pulverize It" is designed as a "terminal defense" or "blanket method," providing a viable option for threats with shorter warning windows.
Implications for Global Safety
With more than 2,000 "potentially hazardous" asteroids already identified, the ability to neutralize a threat that cannot be deflected is critical. This approach serves as a fail-safe against "city-killer" asteroids that could otherwise cause global devastation. Professor Lubin has criticized the current reactive nature of planetary defense, stating, "The current strategy is more like 'let's wait for a threat to present itself; then we'll have a group meeting and decide what to do.'"
Future Integration
Looking ahead, Lubin is positioning the "Pulverize It" method as a potential addition to the "Golden Dome" missile defense framework proposed by Donald Trump. Lubin argues that the necessary technology already exists to establish a comprehensive planetary defense system, though it has not yet been implemented. The team continues to use NIAC-supported simulations to refine the precise mass and speed required to ensure total pulverization of incoming threats.
