KOSDAQ Rising Stars Pivot to AI, Robotics and Space Tech

The Korea Exchange's 2026 selections signal a strategic shift from traditional hardware manufacturing toward high-value deep tech.

The Korea Exchange (KRX) has signaled a strategic shift in South Korea's innovation landscape with the announcement of the 2026 KOSDAQ Rising Stars. The latest list reveals a transition away from traditional manufacturing toward frontier "deep tech" sectors, including artificial intelligence, robotics, and space technology.

On August 12, the KRX selected 18 companies for the designation, consisting of 10 existing members and eight new entrants. First-time entrants make up 44% of the 2026 cohort, including Nara Space Technology, RaonSecure, Curiosis, Sena Technologies, Mecaro, Wontek, Sunic System, and TSI. The existing companies maintaining their status include Lunit, ST Pharm, SEMCNS, SFA Nexel, Neosem, Next Biomedical, T&L, Emro, Genians, and TrueN.

Evolution of the Venture Ecosystem

Since 2009, the KRX has utilized the Rising Star program—formerly known as "Hidden Champions"—to identify and support promising listed firms. Historically, the list was dominated by biotech firms and manufacturers of semiconductor and display equipment. However, the composition has evolved rapidly over the last five years. While 2022 remained focused on semiconductors and new drugs, 2023 saw the introduction of cybersecurity and AI-based software. By 2024, the list expanded to include medical AI and collaborative robots, culminating in the 2026 list's inclusion of advanced digital security and ultra-small satellites.

Strategic Implications for Growth

This shift serves as a critical barometer for the South Korean venture ecosystem. According to a securities company official, while semiconductor, display, and bio industries were the two primary pillars five years ago, AI, software, security, robotics, and space have now emerged as new pillars built upon those foundations. The transition suggests that domestic small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) are successfully diversifying their competitiveness beyond hardware manufacturing into high-value software and frontier technologies.

For the South Korean economy, this diversification is essential for long-term global competitiveness. The Rising Star designation is specifically awarded to firms demonstrating significant domestic market share in innovative industries, high global dominance in core products, or strong potential for international growth. To accelerate this trajectory, selected companies receive tangible support, including the publication of corporate analysis reports, IR event support, and exemptions from listing fees.

Future Outlook

As the KRX continues to pivot its support toward deep tech, the industry will be watching whether these new pillars can achieve the same global scale as the previous generation of hardware champions. The inclusion of space technology and advanced security indicates a broader ambition to lead in markets that were previously the domain of a few global giants. Whether these 18 companies can translate their technical dominance into sustained market leadership remains the key metric for the program's success.
