Madhya Pradesh allocates ₹734 crore for science and AI through 2031

The state cabinet has approved a long-term funding roadmap for research and the AI-driven conservation of the Narmada River.

The Madhya Pradesh Cabinet has approved a significant financial commitment to modernize the state's scientific infrastructure and environmental monitoring. Chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, the government has allocated ₹734 crore to the Department of Science and Technology to sustain research, innovation, and capacity building from April 1, 2026, through March 31, 2031.

This ₹734 crore allocation is structured to target specific growth areas. The breakdown includes ₹201.28 crore dedicated specifically to research and development, while ₹172.52 crore is earmarked for science popularization. Additionally, the state has approved ₹241.16 crore for the Madhya Pradesh State Electronics Development Corporation (MPSEDC) and ₹119.04 crore for direction and administration. These investments are part of a much larger development and welfare package totaling approximately ₹1.46 lakh crore.

Integrating Deep-Tech in Governance

A centerpiece of this scientific push is the launch of the 'Nirmal Evam Aviral Maa Narmada Mission,' or the NAMAN Mission. This initiative marks a shift toward data-driven environmental governance by integrating artificial intelligence (AI), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and remote sensing. The mission will utilize these technologies alongside climate change modelling to conduct scientific health assessments of the Narmada River, moving away from traditional monitoring toward a more predictive, analytical framework.

Strategic Implications

This allocation signals a strategic pivot by the Madhya Pradesh government to embed deep-tech into the state's administrative and environmental management systems. By securing funding through 2031, the state is attempting to move beyond short-term grants toward a durable scientific ecosystem. The integration of AI and GIS into the NAMAN Mission suggests that the state views high-tech monitoring as essential for the sustainable management of its natural resources and public infrastructure.

The Broader Roadmap

These technology initiatives are embedded within a wider state development roadmap. While the science and AI sectors receive targeted funding, the broader ₹1.46 lakh crore outlay includes massive investments in other social sectors, including healthcare and agriculture, alongside funding for women's welfare via the Ladli Behna and Ladli Laxmi schemes.
