SpaceX Recovers Intact Starship Upper Stage After 24-Day Indian Ocean Ordeal
Ship 40 arrives at Christmas Island, providing engineers with unprecedented physical data from a survived reentry.
SpaceX has successfully towed Ship 40, the upper stage from its 13th test flight, to the calm waters of Christmas Island. The recovery marks the first time a Starship upper stage has survived a splashdown intact after flying in space.
The 171-foot (52-meter) spacecraft performed its historic splashdown on July 24. Following the landing, a SpaceX recovery team spent approximately 24 days battling rough seas and challenging conditions in the Indian Ocean to secure and tow the vehicle. The craft is now positioned at the Australian territory of Christmas Island, located roughly 1,200 miles northwest of Broome, where engineers are arriving to conduct a detailed analysis before attempting to transport the vehicle back to Starbase in Texas.
A Shift in Test Outcomes
This recovery represents a significant technical milestone compared to previous iterations of the program. While Flight 13 utilized the Version 3 (V3) design of the Starship rocket, earlier tests often ended in total vehicle loss. Historically, upper-stage splashdowns were expected to end in destruction; the survival of Ship 40 breaks that pattern, shifting the program from a cycle of total loss toward a regime of hardware recovery.
The Value of Physical Data
The intact recovery of Ship 40 provides SpaceX with a unique opportunity to perform physical forensics on a vehicle that has endured the extreme stresses of spaceflight and atmospheric reentry. This data is critical for refining the vehicle's aerodynamics, hydraulics, and the efficiency of its heat tiles. Such insights are essential as the company pushes toward full reusability, moving beyond telemetry data to examine actual hardware wear and tear. By analyzing the physical state of the heat shield and structural integrity, engineers can identify failure points that sensors alone might miss.
The Path to the Moon
These refinements are not merely for internal testing but are tied to high-stakes government contracts. NASA has contracted Starship for an orbital rendezvous for Artemis III next year and the Artemis IV moon landing scheduled for 2028. Ensuring the vehicle can survive reentry and landing is a prerequisite for returning astronauts from the lunar surface, where the thermal loads are significantly higher than those experienced during low-Earth orbit returns.
Looking ahead, SpaceX is moving quickly toward its next milestone. The company plans to launch Flight 14 before the end of August. This upcoming mission will aim for an even more ambitious recovery: using the 'Mechazilla' tower to catch both the Super Heavy booster and the Starship upper stage mid-air, eliminating the need for ocean recoveries entirely.
