Mitsubishi Electric Invests $10 Million in Array Labs for Space-Based Radar
Japan's satellite giant partners with U.S. startup to deploy orbital tracking systems for airborne targets.
Mitsubishi Electric has invested $10 million in U.S.-based startup Array Labs to accelerate the commercialization of space-based Airborne Moving Target Indication (AMTI) technology. The partnership, announced on July 24, 2026, merges Mitsubishi’s satellite manufacturing scale with Array Labs' specialized radar systems to track aircraft from orbit.
The investment was part of a larger $21 million strategic funding round anchored by Mitsubishi Electric. The collaboration focuses on integrating radar technology into satellite constellations to enable the continuous detection and tracking of airborne moving objects over vast airspaces. This orbital approach allows surveillance to bypass the terrain obstacles and installation constraints that typically limit ground-based radar systems. Array Labs intends to demonstrate these capabilities by launching formation-flying satellites in 2027.
The Shift to Orbital Surveillance
Traditional airborne surveillance, long dominated by platforms like the Boeing E-3 AWACS, is increasingly supplemented by space-based assets to improve survivability and expand global reach. This transition reflects a broader trend in defense procurement; the U.S. Space Force has similarly awarded hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts to firms such as Rocket Lab and STR LLC to fast-track the development of space-based missile and aircraft tracking.
Strategic Implications for the Asia-Pacific
For Japan, the move toward space-based AMTI represents a significant shift in regional deterrence. By establishing a "look-down" capability from the "ultimate high ground," Japan can achieve persistent, wide-area surveillance of its airspace. Masahiko Arai, an Executive Officer at Mitsubishi Electric, stated that the synergy between the two companies is expected to strengthen their ability to respond comprehensively to customer needs within the security field.

Industry observers are now looking toward the 2027-2028 window, when Array Labs plans to launch multiple radar satellites to prove its constellation capabilities. While the primary goal is the detection of moving targets, the extent to which these systems can effectively monitor low-observable aircraft remains a key point of interest for defense analysts. The success of these initial launches will determine the pace at which orbital AMTI replaces or augments traditional radar networks in the region.
