Overview Energy Emerges from Stealth to Beam Space-Based Solar Power via Lasers
The US startup aims to eliminate solar intermittency by powering ground-based solar farms at night using near-infrared lasers from orbit.
US startup Overview Energy has emerged from stealth with a proposal to harvest solar energy in geosynchronous orbit and beam it to Earth using near-infrared lasers. The system is designed to provide continuous, 24/7 clean energy by powering existing ground-based solar farms during nighttime hours.
To prove technical feasibility, the company recently conducted its first airborne power-beaming demonstration. Using a Cessna Caravan, Overview Energy successfully transmitted energy to a ground receiver located 5 kilometers below the aircraft. The proposed orbital system will utilize near-infrared wavelengths chosen to match the peak efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) panel semiconductors. According to the company, this alignment could make energy conversion two to three times more efficient than standard sunlight.
The Shift to Laser Transmission
Space-based solar power (SBSP) has remained a theoretical concept since the early 20th century, gaining traction during the energy crises of the 1970s. While traditional SBSP designs typically focused on microwave transmission, newer ventures like Overview Energy are pivoting toward laser-based delivery. This approach allows for easier integration with existing terrestrial solar infrastructure and significantly reduces the land footprint required for receiving stations.
Safety and Precision
Addressing the inherent risks of orbital lasers, Overview Energy has designed the system to be "passively safe." The beam intensity is rated at approximately 350 W/m², which is less than half the illumination of sunlight on a clear day. To prevent accidental exposure, the satellites employ a closed-loop tracking system utilizing a homing beacon. If the link between the satellite and the receiver is disrupted, the beam defocuses and shuts off instantly.
Solving the Intermittency Problem
If successful, this technology addresses the primary weakness of solar energy: intermittency. By decoupling energy generation, which remains constant in space, from consumption on Earth, solar power can be transformed from a daytime-only resource into a 24/7 baseload power source. This shift would reduce global reliance on massive battery storage arrays or the construction of new, land-intensive transmission lines.
"Our grid doesn’t have a generation problem. It has a delivery problem," said Marc Berte of Overview Energy.
Future Outlook
While the airborne demonstration confirms the basic physics of the beam, the transition to geosynchronous orbit presents significant scaling and deployment challenges. Observers will be watching for further tests regarding atmospheric interference and the long-term stability of the closed-loop tracking system. While some third-party reports suggest ambitions to transmit up to one gigawatt of energy, the company's current focus remains on the technical validation of its near-infrared delivery system.
