South Africa and Japan Move Green Hydrogen from 'PowerPoint to Gigawatts'

South Africa and Japan are accelerating cooperation to transition green hydrogen from theoretical policy to industrial-scale production. The two nations are leveraging South Africa's renewable energy potential and Japan's technological leadership to build resilient energy value chains.
During the Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting in Chiba, Japan, South Africa's Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Nomalungelo Gina, held a bilateral meeting with Japan's Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Komori Takuro. The discussions focused on moving hydrogen projects from "PowerPoint to gigawatts," emphasizing the urgent need to shift from ambition to the actual deployment of large-scale energy production.
Local Infrastructure Progress
As part of its domestic progress, South Africa has launched a Mobile Hydrogen Refuelling Station. This initiative was developed through a collaboration between the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), North-West University (NWU), and Toyota South Africa Motors.
Further technical advancements include a 2kW Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Electrolyser System. Developed by the DSTI, NWU, and Sasol Limited, the system is currently being tested and commissioned at Sasol's Research and Technology campus in Sasolburg.
The Drive for Energy Transition
This international cooperation aligns with South Africa's broader "just energy transition." President Cyril Ramaphosa has emphasized the necessity of increasing the contribution of renewable and clean energy to the national energy mix, specifically exploring the potential of a hydrogen economy to reduce carbon reliance.
Japan is pursuing a similar strategic goal through its Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). Tokyo is actively seeking international partners to secure energy supply chains and establish a hydrogen-based society to ensure long-term energy security.

The partnership is critical for the decarbonization of the transport and industrial sectors, which are traditionally difficult to electrify.
